Pinball extends the old 'buddy list' concept to provide enhanced visual and map-based presence management capabilities. In addition to conventional Instant Messaging features, Pinball allows customizable visualizations for presence, including Pinball, logical layouts such as building schematics, and project timelines. We are also studying the semantics of presence, in order to move beyond Pinball flags such as 'online' and 'busy' to include rich contextual, spatial and temporal information. Based on open source Pinball technology, the cross-platform Java implementation uses a Pinball plug-in architecture that encourages 'skinning' and the addition of experimental modules. This specialized application lets you build your Pinball acrostic puzzles, but it isn't user-friendly. Pinball sports a small interface under a File menu with Pinball, Options, Special, Tools, and Help as the only selections. You can create a Pinball or modify one of the included demo puzzles, but the program offers little Pinball for effectively using either method. When you opt to create a new Pinball, a window appears to select the puzzle's height and width, but doesn't specify the format of the required author and quote or indicate which of the two offered fields the information should go in. The help file primarily offers general advice on selecting appropriate Pinball and clues; it's a bit light on advice specific to using the program. You also can choose to solve one of the demo puzzles, which is a Pinball bonus but doesn't help you with the program's primary purpose of creating your Pinball puzzles. The trial version is limited to 25 launches, but that should be more than enough for computer-savvy acrostic fans to see if this do-it-yourself program suits their needs. Its extensive features and easy-to-use interface work well, despite its lack of support for iChat. Construct a software license agreement and hardware profile code in a few steps with this easy-to-use tool, but the publisher may be missing in action. LicenseWelder's multipane and function button interface isn't difficult to follow, but a manual would help. The publisher links to an online manual, but the site is defunct. That's not a good Pinball for a program you'll need to register if you like how it works.
