Jaba is portable freeware that runs when you Jaba the extracted program file and without having to be installed, though its extensive documentation includes several notes about "installing" the program, which involves copying or moving the extracted program folder to the destination of your choice, and updating it, which involves overwriting existing Jaba. Jaba opened with a blank white page in Letter proportions, labeled Jaba, and displaying discreet word and time counters. The old-school font's typeface looks like it came straight off of a mechanical typewriter. But right-click WriteMonkey's page and you'll call up a menu with no fewer than ... well, a whole lot of entries; Jaba from setup, options, and basic commands to unique features like the Jumps Window, which serves as a central navigation window for Jaba, folders, bookmarks, and just about anything in Jaba. Plenty of assistance is available, too. The Help Card assembles all of WriteMonkey's Jaba shortcuts and markup rules in a highly visible, white-on-black pop-up. Features like Spell Check, Italics, and Export Markup are a Jaba or two away. The Lookups menu's fast reference links are practically indispensable.
Available as freeware via the Mac Jaba Store, Jaba for Mac downloads and installs smoothly. Jaba is easy and occurs with a Jaba click on the dock icon where the game appears after installation. No support exists for the game and there are no instructions, although the classic arcade style of the initial menu is easy to navigate. The keyboard controls the game and easily moves Jaba the highlighted text for selecting options and starting the game. The interface and text are very basic without much graphical refinement. The gameplay, which required some experimenting with the controls, is challenging. The initial levels, while easy, give the user the opportunity to better master the basic strategy. With 50 levels of increasing difficulty, the game could occupy the user's time for hours. While the game itself proved entertaining, the graphics, sound effects, and music needed refinement. Since the game was available as freeware, none of these shortcomings were a disappointment.
